Lindemann Eta®Press baling press

Baling presses from the Lindemann Eta®Press series are hydraulic presses with triple-acting compaction and an ejection door. They are able to press steel sheets, brass, copper, and aluminum scrap that is generated by press works, refineries, and recycling industry scrap yards, into high density bales.

Lindemann Eta®Press baling press series include a wide range of triple-acting scrap balers. We have the right scrap baling press for any application, from the smallest model, the Lindemann Eta®Press 22 with a 0.9 m³ press box, to the largest press, the Lindemann Eta®Press 66 with a press box volume of 19.2 m³. The drive and control concepts for these scrap baling presses provide efficient operation with especially low energy consumption and maximum throughput capacity.

The potential applications for the Lindemann Eta®Press model series range from outdoor operation in scrap yards, to integration in the press plant manufacturing chain, with automatic infeed and discharge for 24/7 operation, where accumulated metal scrap is compacted into high density bales right on the spot.

The squared bale dimensions of the series range from 250 mm to 600 mm. The specific press force (measured in N/mm²) of compactor 3 is approximately the same on all triple-acting scrap balers. This means that any scrap bale can be produced with similar high density - no matter which model is used. For the Lindemann Eta®Press 66, an extra strong final compactor (1000 t) is available.

The bales produced are very well suited for remelting in cupola and induction furnaces. Length and density of the bales can be adjusted by the operator, though they also depend on the feeding density of the scrap material, as well as its mechanical properties.

Main Features

Mechanical properties

Each compactor is equipped with mechanical limit stops that prevent compactor jams or protrusions during compacting. In addition, the compactors are supported by long parallel guides, so as to minimize friction for the forward and return motion. The wear plates on the scrap baling presses have a specially designed washboard profile to prevent compactors from jamming, particularly when compacting trim pieces and long, thin metal strips. Wear plates with a trapezoidal profile are also available.

Closed system of forces and pre-stressed tension rods

Pre-stressed tie-rods provide the connection between the cylinder traverse of the final pressure cylinder and the door on the other side of the baler. The closed system of forces keeps most of the dynamic loads inside, so that the press box and foundation are nearly unaffected by them.

Maintenance solutions

The compact well-dimensioned construction of the scrap balers is sturdy and durable. The common wear parts on the compactors can be replaced easily, without having to remove the entire compactor unit. Maintenance is simplified by detail solutions.

Non-contact position measurement

The non-contact position measuring system, integrated in the hydraulic cylinders, makes downtime caused by dirt or mechanical damage to proximity switches a thing of the past. The non-contact position measuring system allows optimum motion control of all cylinders.

Flexible bale length and density

The bale length and density can be flexibly adapted to the feedstock and, most importantly, to the end customer's requirements.

Oil return

An oil transfer system is integrated in order to further increase the operating speed. It feeds hydraulic oil returning from one cylinder directly into another cylinder operating in the low pressure range. Furthermore, hydraulic pump flow separation allows simultaneous control of several cylinders, as well as separate oil pressure control. These measures significantly reduce the overall cycle time of the baling process and increase energy efficiency.

Oil-level monitoring

The electronic oil-level monitoring system detects even the smallest oil losses at an early stage and reports them on the display.

Central lubrication

The sliding surfaces of the compactors, the doors, and the blades are lubricated by a single-line distribution system. The quantity of lubricant and the sequence of the lubricating process are controlled by the programmable controller.

Human Machine Interface (HMI) visualization

A multi-functional terminal supports operations and any troubleshooting that may be needed. The terminal consists of a large display that shows all process-relevant information and status reports, and a number of control elements arranged in a user-friendly layout.

Settings:

  • Pressure selection
  • Bale length selection
  • Lubrication setup

Information:

  • Oil pressure
  • Oil temperature
  • Oil level
  • Capacity

Complete processing lines

Metso can supply more than just baling presses - we can deliver tailor-made scrap handling systems for automatic feed and discharge, integrated in the manufacturing processes of press shops, such as those in the automotive industry.

Benefits

Costs savings

The hydraulic systems of the scrap baling presses are designed for maximum press performance at an economically justifiable cost. Any further increase in the specific press force (N/mm²) would produce only a slightly higher bale density, requiring unreasonably higher energy input and resulting in additional wear. The optimized control system supports the best possible utilization of energy input, while simultaneously achieving the highest throughput capacity

Serviceability

  • Compact design for easy maintenance access
  • PLC controlled operation and malfunction detection
  • Oil volume indication for leakage control
  • HMI: malfunction monitoring system

Efficiency

  • Large, bent pipe diameters for optimum efficiency and low energy loss
  • Smooth pump operation
  • Hydraulics optimized for cycle time
  •  High capacity and availability

Flexibility

  • Adjustable bale length and density
  • Smooth, controlled material feeding and discharge

Versatility

  • Able to bale different kinds of scrap, such as steel, brass, copper, or aluminum
  • Made for both scrap yards and industrial installations
  • Able to bale at a preselected pressure or to a preselected bale length

Handling & transportation

  • Automatic bale discharge systems
    -uniform bale length if needed
-minimized damage to containers or railroad cars
